Paul Graham is a blogger that I often find worth reading. His latest article, How to do What You Love, is no exception.

It's not a bad article. I notice he doesn't actually offer much in the way of solutions to the problem he poses, but that's a common thread in most articles of that sort.

Also, his stance on English lit. made my teeth itch. What do you mean, no one wants to work on identity and gender in Conrad? Seriously, people don't study literature for the great employment possibilities, and people don't stop analysing literature just because they don't have a job in a university (I know that I still read books with a critical view, even though I graduated five years ago). Math will happen without a math department, sure, but so will English.

Yeah, that's one thing I don't like about Paul Graham - he seems a bit full of himself. Of course nobody wants to work on identity and gender in Conrad; Paul Graham doesn't, and he's the smartest man in the world, so no other right-thinking person possibly could either.

That's a bit of an exaggeration, but it turns me off his writing a bit. A shame, because he's otherwise reasonably sensible and has good ideas.
