VCD: WTF

In preparation for getting rid of my old VHS collection of movies, TV-shows, etc., I've started downloading episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and burning them to CD. I have the entire series on VHS, and would like to have it in digital format. If I could just afford to buy the DVDs, I would, but on my budget, this will have to do for now.

Anyway, the problem is that the VCDs that I've burned so far display normally on my computer, but have large numbers of artifacts and sound glitches when played on my DVD player. I'm at a loss, as I followed the exact same procedure to create these VCD's as I have numerous others in the past, all of which worked.

I don't know if its my DVD player, or something unusual about these CDs, and I'm not sure how to find out.

Some CD-R are not very well read in some drives. What you describe is likely reading error, not a wrong format.

Did you use the same brand of CD-R as usual ?

I hadn't heard of that problem! This is a new brand of CDs that I haven't used much before, but I did burn a number of Dr. Who episodes onto them earlier, and they were okay. Actually ... come to think of it, there may have been some artifacting then as well...

I'll do some more experiments, and see what happens.
