Webigail is alive again, and acting like nothing untoward happened over the last week. So far I haven't found any missing or damaged files at all! All file checks have come up completely clean! Its still conceivable, I suppose, that some files got a few bytes modified in their middles that went undetected, and I'll keep a lookout for that, but so far its looking really good.

Do you know I bought a LaCie backup hard drive and already it won't mount on my desktop. Micro Boutique said I can return it for a new one, but it bothers me because my files are still on there -- I just can't see them!!

Any tricks you know for "erasing" a disk when you can't see it?

None that won't void your warranty. A large electromagnet bulk-eraser would do the job, but that would also destroy the disk, while right now it is probably possible for the hard drive company to format, recondition and resell the drive.

Depending on how the external backup unit is put together, it may be relatively simple to open it up, and put the encased hard-drive into a computer just long enough to format it. That might even make it work again, depending on how the external drive works.

Maybe someone else can mount it on another machine? What kind of drive is it? USB?
