Here's a website showing a bunch of the worlds subway systems, all at the same scale. Yes, Montreal's is in the list. Ours may not be the tiniest and most pathetic subway system on the list, but we're a contender.

Yeah, BART goes a long way...[livejournal.com profile] assaultdoor commutes from the southeast line's end to the northeast line's end, which is about two hours. But it needs more "spokes" to be really useful.

Look how huge BART is, and yet how few branches it has, rendering it all but useless. Gragh.

I wish the Taipei MRT were on there.

Some of them are fascinating in their simplicity, esp. when they're just following a shoreline. On the other hand, what's always driven me crazy(ier) about Toronto's officials is that they believe that it is much more cost effective to have rapid transit (read dedicated streetcars) above ground rather than building/extending a subway. Umm, do you not realize that one subway train can carry - what - 10 to 20 times the number of passengers in a streetcar. Plus way faster. I just wish they'd built them years ago, and it would have been so much cheaper. But ... le sigh.

Thanks for providing the comparisons.
