It seems that damage to a particular portion of the brain cures the patient of the urge to smoke.

I can confirm this anecdotally. My uncle, who was a smoker for 30+ years, suffered minor brain damage in an industrial accident. When he woke up from the anesthetic/mild coma, he had no urge to smoke, and hasn't since. He says the brain damage made him 'forget how' to smoke.
