It seems that the greenhouse gases emitted by New York City are equal to those of all of Portugal.

Or, put another way, New York City is more than twice as efficient as Portugal in terms of greenhouse gases generated per unit of economic output. (A little googling indicates New York's GDP is circa US$457 billion, Portugal's is some US$170 billion.)

Also, while NYC is on paper smaller than Portugal in terms of people - 8.2 million vs. 10.7 million - a whole lot more people commute to NYC to work every day.
