If you lived in a rural area... I could understand the mice coming in from the field after harvest time, or as temperatures cooled during the changing of the seasons... this, to me, seems like they may have found something to gnaw on, or somewhere to live... in your vicinity. Perhaps it's time to seek out neighbours and in/enquire if they are experiencing a similar problem...
I just had a hmmm thought about the harvest bit. We live across the street from what used to be a large grassy field with trees. For the last three months they've been building a huge condo block there. So, our mouses may indeed be evictees from elsewhere.
