Yesterday.

Yesterday was a long day full of food and departures. It all started way too early when my alarm went off at 10:00 am in the morning. Seeing as I had only managed to fall asleep around 6:00 am, that didn't constitute much sleep.

Even so, I was the first one awake, and probably the one who got the most sleep that night. [livejournal.com profile] taxlady had stayed up very very late doing taxes and was still up not long before I conked out, and Terry, our house guest, was up until 8:00 am foolishly watching Star Trek Nemesis.

Since Terry was leaving us that afternoon we had planned to all go out to Petite Munich for Sunday Brunch as a final chance to do that before he took off. We had been aiming at getting there by 11:00 but it was nearer to noon when we arrived. We wanted to avoid the lunch crowds but we needn't have bothered. What with the rain and all, the place was not very full.

I had a very good plate of food with rye bread, hash browns, an egg and good German bratwurst. Seeing as we wouldn't be coming for breakfast there very often, I had decided to order the food as it normally comes, carbs and all. On the other hand, I noticed that they have both lots of types of sausages (no big surprise) and goulash soup on the menu. Both of these are quite low carb, so its likely I'll make a point of going back sometime for lunch.

I just hope they make a good Goulash Soup. I haven't had any for close to 20 years, not since Cafe Prague on Bishop street closed down, and I've been craving some ever since. There are a few places in Montreal where you can get goulash, but its just not the same.

After a long and leisurely breakfast (and many cups of coffee) we headed back to the house where Terry spent the next couple of hours packing for his trip to WorldCon *blatant envy*. He claims its a working trip and he won't have any fun at all, but I don't believe that for a moment.

Since I had to head downtown as well, I helped him schlep his bags onto the bus and then onto the other bus, and then onto the metro, and finally up the stairs at Vendome where I left him to deal with catching his bus to meet up with friends and co-conspirators (Complete digression: How can co-conspirators be a word? Both the co- and con- prefixes mean together... Its a redundantly redundant word.)

Getting back on the metro I headed for Kilo in the Gay Village to meet up with [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste and gang for her going-away thingy. She will shortly be moving to Calgary to be with her SO, who's job is transferring him there, so this would be my last chance to see her for quite some time. (She should probably look up [livejournal.com profile] labyrinthman when she gets there. In fact, [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste and [livejournal.com profile] labyrinthman, consider yourselves introduced.)

Checking around with friends I had found out that Kilo is a desert place, like Calories, so I assumed that our 7:00 pm meeting was just for desert. As it was now past 5:00 pm and breakfast had been a while ago, I stopped to grab a few slices of pizza before leisurely heading on towards the meet-up destination.

It was only when I got there that I realized that [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste was the only one showing that I was sure to recognize. I had only ever met [livejournal.com profile] montrealais briefly twice before, and so far as I knew,  I had never met any of the others at all. Since I was early and quite possibly the first there, I was presented with a bit of a dilemma. I could grab tables but what if another early bird was already there and had done the same?

There had been mention of making a reservation, but I didn't know under what name it might have been made. I asked a waitress if there were any reservations for this time, and there weren't. I started wondering if I there on the right day, as it was now past 7:00 and I had yet to see anybody I recognized.

I headed out onto the sidewalk to phone [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste to see if I had somehow got the day wrong, when I passed a group of people where one of them looked familiar. I asked and it was indeed [livejournal.com profile] montrealais and most of the rest of the gang. We headed in and sat down and eventually got served water and menus.

The food might have been good at Kilo's but man, was the service terrible! It turned out that it was a supper thing after all as Kilo is (despite what everyone told me) more of a restaurant than a dessert place. I ordered a chili wrap that would have been quite good had it not taken so long to be served that it was cold when it arrived, and finished it off with cheesecake and coffee.

There was conversation on a large amount of geeky topics and I rather enjoyed my time there despite my old shy habits trying to force themselves to the fore since I was with so many strangers. I gathered that just about everyone there had LJs, but I never managed to catch their handles. So I guess that will have to wait for some other time.

In the end folks had to leave as today is a work day for most, and [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste had more packing and a long drive still ahead of her that night, so we all headed our separate ways. Heading home the rain and the double departure today had me feeling quite melancholy. Lately it seems I'm saying goodbye to folks far more often than hello. At least I was heading home to my sweetheart. I have seldom been so glad that [livejournal.com profile] taxlady was in my life; someone to always be there for me, through thick and thin. It makes all the other departures that much easier to take.

I finally got home and although I was dead tired and got ready for bed immediately, sleep would not come. In the end I opened up the bottle of Port that [livejournal.com profile] foi_nefaste had given me at the going away, as she didn't want to pack it all the way to Calgary. Three glasses of that and a snack and I was finally able to fall asleep.

And now its a new day and I've just added up the carbs I had yesterday. OY! If I don't eat again until Friday my diet will just about balance out. I'm going to have to be extra good for the next couple of weeks, I think.

And thanks for showing up! Yes, I don't know WHAT was up with the service - we usually go for lunch/afternoon cakes, and they're half-decent, usually. Annoying, really. But at least, in my opinion, the cakes were fabulous. And, again, it was great to see you!
