I once read a Science Fiction story in which the main character got around in lightless caves via echo location. He clicked rocks together and navigated by the sounds, like a bat. I thought it a bit far fetched at the time, but now it turns out that people can do that.

I knew a blind man long ago in Winnipeg who found his way around by how the buildings and such modified the ambient noise.

read that book years ago and the title eluded me until it came up on Asimov's forum a while back --IIRC, there was another group caleld 'zivvers' who would see infra-red.

Nope, don't know it. I think I may have read a short story with a similar character - oh, wait, it was probably in a comic book. That's a pretty obvious super hero power.

He wrote another book that was essentially the same, but instead of discovering light, people discovered amazing psychci powers.
