it turns out that Wikipedia also has an entry for "Evil Twins" with a cross reference to Goatees. I am also somewhat disturbed to discover that Professor X's evil twin is female.

Found the (a) reference!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor_X#Cassandra_Nova - turns out I recall noticing a bit of that storyline.
As a side note, it's remarkable how much of a Booker T. Washington figure is Prof. X. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Booker_T._Washington. Washington founded his own school to teach his people to make positive contributions to a society that feared and hated them.
