Misremembered.
Apr. 25th, 2006 01:36 pmI'm kinda glad that I now have an LJ journal to post rememberances and stuff in. If, 20 years from now, I can't remember where the heck I stayed in Copenhagen, I can pull up my memories from when I was visiting and find the relevant info.
... only of course now that I look back through my memories, I see that I never posted a google-map pointer to where we were, although I distinctly remember figuring it out while I was there, and planning to post the link...
Okay. It turns out that NONE of the three places I was about to give pointer to can be easily handled in Google Maps. I have found no way to just click on a location and say 'Here!'. This is no doubt why I didn't do it before, but I'm more determined today. The best I can manage is:
This is where we stayed in Copenhagen Actual address was 4 Nordborggade, on the corner of Nordborggade and Kastelvej.
We stayed at the Keflavik Hotel in Iceland, although I would recommend the Flughotel next door as its somewhat nicer, and has better food. Closest I can get with Google Maps is this. The hotel is dead center of the page.
Finally this is where we had really good food in Contoocook on the way back from Boston. Again, this is the best I could do with Google. The place was called something like the "Country Village Cafe" and had really good food and pie, but was only open for breakfast and lunch.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting all of this was that I was just reminiscing about my trip to Bremen in 1989. I was just using Google maps to explore the town, and nothing looked familiar. I couldn't even recognize the damn cathedral from the air, and it dominates the entire town. There was a park I wondered through, but I couldn't be sure I had found it. There was the moat with ducks across from the 17th century mansion I was working in, and it could have been any one of a dozen spots.
I did find the Schnoor, but only because it was marked on the map, and although I know I wandered around it for many hours and bought my then-favorite mug there, I didn't recognize any of it.
My memory for names, faces and places has never been good, and it seems to be diminishing with age...
