Its long and rambling, so I'm putting it behind a cut.
Deepest Sender is a mozilla-plugin livejournal client I've been trying out. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. It lacks some basic features I would like, but then again this is only V0.3.1.
In other news, I've had an accident and watched the first 12 episodes of 'Chobits'. As a result I am now impatiently waiting for the next batch of 12 or so to download. At my current download rate, I won't get to watch the rest of the episodes until I wake up tomorrow. Darn :-/ For those (like me a short while ago) who don't know, 'Chobits' is an anime about life in a futuristic Tokyo where most people own 'persocoms' which are personal assitant robots and communication tools. They range in size and intelligence from really dumb and fitting on a key ring to human size and quite intelligent. The hero is a country bumpkin and too poor to own a persocom, but on his first day in the city he finds a human-sized (and very cute) female persocom discarded on a rubbish heap. He takes it home but it has only a basic learning ability and (seemingly) no other software. The hero can't afford software, and can't figure out the unit's model so he would know what was compatible anyway, so he tries to teach her everything himself. Much hillarity ensues, and of course there is much more to this 'Chi' than is apparant. She just may be one of the legendary 'Chobit' super-computer models...
Other other news is that the previews of Thief 3 have been very positive and its beginning to look like a most desirable game. In particular, you can customize the difficulty levels, and can push it all the way up to "Lytha Level" (Lytha is a fan who discovered you could win at Thief 1 and Thief 2 without ever resorting to violence. If you are good, (I mean REALLY GOOD) at the game, you can win without ever having been seen at all, and with all of the doors and locks in the same state when you leave as when you entered... This is way beyond what the games hardest mode requires.) There are also a bunch of slightly-less warm reviews of "Deus Ex" and "Deus Ex 2" which are made by the same folks as are doing Thief 3. The "Deus Ex" series also looks intriguing because although the main hero is a cybernetically augmented super agent working for a shadowy conspiracy, its not a strict shoot-em-up. In fact, most problems have non-lethal solutions. Like Thief, there are many places where you have to carefully plan what you are going to do and spend much time sneaking around and, depending on what skills you've picked up, different solutions to problems become apparant. Unlike in Thief, some of these solutions involve assassination or killing everyone by rigging the area with explosives... It also has the added benefit that while you are on your missions you're also trying to gather enough secret info to figure out WTF is REALLY going on. So, I definitely want to play Thief 3 when it comes out, and I'd be willing to try Deus Ex if I found it in a remainder bin (Deus Ex 2 should be out around now).
Reviews of URU, the latest Myst game is not so hot. Apparantly whats in the box is only the standalone 'intro' to the game, and without any way to connect to the net game. The stand alone game IS lots of fun, everyone says, but its too short (15-20 hours to solve) and so folks are recommending not buying it until the online game world is up and running. They also say that the only way to interact with other characters in the online version will be to talk to them, which may bother some fans of onlines games, but sounds fine by me.
And lastly, I think I've been in denial about winter. You see, for me its still early autumn. I've maintained this mental illusion by not going out of the house much (or even looking out windows) for the last few weeks. I've only been outside once since it snowed, and that was just to walk along a cleared path to take out the garbage. I haven't had to deal with trudging through new-fallen snow or with cold winds or anything. Some part of my mind keeps insisting that the light dusting I saw while taking out the garbage was an unseasonable early snow and will soon melt.
I would get out of the house more, but every time I do so, I spend money; and I've been trying to avoid that. Besides, I have a bunch of stuff I need to actually get around to doing, like finish reading the Subversion and Apache manuals so I can set up a proper website. Speaking of which... maybe I'll play some solitaire.
