Technaut Idea Update.
Mar. 23rd, 2006 02:49 amI thought I should mention that I've just run across someone doing something similar what I suggested in one of my
technaut columns. Mainly this column, in which I talk about a GPS-enabled search function. Well, it looks like Loki has taken the idea one step further and is mapping WiFi hotspots so that no GPS system is required. This is a great idea, in that in tremendously lowers the barrier to entry for users (as GPS phones are rare and expensive) although it has far greater company costs, iand far harder to keep up-to-date.
Still, its one of those services that is only useful if everyone is using it. I suggested a digital Agora to help create the network effect. They're going another route, but it doesn't seem a bad plan, all in all. I'm interested in seeing how well they do.
