Here's someone who's built themselves a 5-Terabyte storage system (20 x 250 GB disks) and has ripped 500 DVDs to store on it, indexed in a number of ways. The system can stream the files over gig ether to his TV.
I've got 500-odd CDs ripped onto the half-terabyte or so I've got in this machine. I'll not have to worry about scratches again, and storing them losslessly means never having to worry about losing data in transcoding. I've yet to rig up a streamer, but it certainly makes listening near the computer much easier!
