Macleans is reporting on a new female contraceptive drug called Anya that will completely suppress mentration when used. Its due to go on sale in 2006.

I've heard about that. Most women will have to submit to annual osteo testing however. But for women with a history of reproductive cancers... like the women in my family... it only adds to the risk with monthly periods. And in truth, there is no reason to bleed, if you're not gonna breed. Period.

That's either the next newest and bestest stocking stuffer, or the Apocalypse waiting to happen.

I have mixed feelings about this. Part of it is that my periods have never been much of an inconvenience. I really don't think much about them, so the idea of supressing them doesn't appeal particularly, for two reasons.

First, it's monthly assurance that I'm not pregnant. That's not an issue right now, but back in The Day, it was important indeed.

Second, it's--gad, how do I say this without sounding like this one ex-friend of mine who elevated fertility to a weird hippie idol? Getting rid of menstruation sounds almost like getting rid of femaleness. Attached as I am to my androgyny, the whole point of androgyny is being both male and female. Well, menstruation is the semiotic female. It feels like eradication of femininity. As a radical feminist, I believe that the only difference between male and female is the biological, and this would eradicate that. I admit that this reaction is purely from the gut, but it's been a persistent one since I first read about this upcoming drug some years ago.

Which sounds damn cool - but, at the moment, anyone who takes the pill continually (that is, skipping the little colored ones or taking the ones that are specifically made for that) gets the same effect.

... the advantage, when taking the pill, is that, in case of doubt, getting a period is a fairly good assurance that the user isn't pregnant. Cheers to that?

We still do, as every step closer to cloning attests.

I fail to see what cloning has to do with patriarchy (which I don't believe in anyway).
