So, I've got my websites all... webbing again. Linux would be a much nicer OS if it acknowledged that it routinely requires folks to install multiple versions of libraries and applications and somehow made it convenient to state which ones to use for which applications. I now have both a threaded and a non-threaded version of perl 5.8.7 installed and none of the multifarious tools I use are willing to make the distinction.

There's always the option of running a specific application inside a chroot (which is easy to set up using debbootstrap or yum), and leaving the rest of your system as-is. Computers have so much disk space these days that blowing away a few 10s of megs on another set of system libraries isn't that big a deal.
