The server is currently UP. Its not quite well yet, but its up.

Yaknow, this is NOT how I prefer to learn more about the guts of Linux (ie, having them spilling onto the floor).

Ultimately, I think it IS a hardware problem. That doesn't mean the diagnosis was easy.
