Well, it looks like it WAS the SATA controller that was suddenly enabled that was renumbering my Drives. I've also discovered that not only does CD1 of my install set have known boot issues, it has block errors as well *headdesk*

Still, I've downloaded a copy of the ISO image for CD1 and have discovered that I can boot from CD2 just fine, so some sort of progress is being made...

Silly people, with their drive letters. It sucked in VMS, sucked in DOS, continues sucking in Windows NT. A proud tradition of suckage!

Yup, and its now sucking in Linux. Lets hear it for a great tradition.

Well, there's no drive letters on *nix. It's fixable with a quick edit of /etc/fstab, at least, as opposed to a massive (and uncertain) hack-up of the registry to search-and-replace drive letters.

unfortunately, what happened is that /dev/hda and /dev/hda (and all of their partitions) got renamed to /dev/hde and /dev/hdf, which broke:

lilo
fstab
raidtab

and a bunch of scripts.

This made it rather hard to boot the system to edit the fstab. Of course, the fact that both the CD-ROM and floppy drives turned out to also be wonky added extra suckage points all around.

As hub_ pointed out, it was basically all just a bad hardware scenario, but I found that having my drive letters autorenamed for me was not a good thing...
