Just had a thought that, with the right promotion and some solid money behind it could become a notion. Once the team is built, it may even be upgradable to an idea!

You see, I've been seeing adds for Chrisco Hampers on TV. The idea is a simple one, and variants of it have been around for years. You sign up with Chrisco and choose from a range of possible 'hampers' on the web site (or through a catalog). Each hamper is a large parcel of foods, typically the sort you need to put together a holiday feast. Then, you let the folks take $3.50 or so (depending on what you've ordered) from your bank account every week until next december, at which point a large bundle of food arrives at your doorstep, just in time to be cooked up for the holiday feast.

Now, you don't get the food for a discount. Typically, for a $260 order, you get about $230 worth of food (if bought at a local grocery). The plan is designed to appeal to the sort of person who never has the money when the holidays rolls around and can't manage to put it aside every week on their own. As Chrisco is only one of a number of similar businesses and has been around for ages, it would look like there are enough such folks to be real market.

Now, I've never had the problem of not having food around, but electronic gizmos are another story. I don't have the latest graphic card, or a 256MB USB Drive or a digital Camera (well -- Okay, I've got one but its only .95 megapixel), or lots of Ram, or...

So, the idea would be very similar. You sign up for the Geek Basket service and choose from one of our several Geek Tracks -- Camera Nut, A/V enthusiast, Digital Spendthrift, Needz Cool Stuff, MegaGamer, etc. Then, we automatically deduct $10 or so dollars from your account every week, and when the next big thing in your track comes along, we apply its cost against your current balance, and send you the item.

With the large amount of money that comes in, and the power that comes from mass purchases, we try to get deals on all the newest items, even items that are unavailable in North America. Be the only one in your city to own a PS2 Portable! Have some of the first IPOD III's that come off of the line!

This idea is still in its earliest forms, but I think it has potential. What do you think?
