Microsoft NOT supporting Itanium?

Well, THIS took me by surpise. Microsoft is opting not to support Itanium on its coming release of Windows Server 2003 Compute Cluster Edition. Is this a sign that Microsoft is thinking of distancing itself from Intel?

They don't mind wallowing in crap at all, that's true, as long as it's profitable. As Itanium is getting slaughtered by AMD64 and is having no leverage at all in the market, where is the money to be made?

Time was, Microsoft would just *insist* that everyone buy itanium boxes to run their code on. After all, they own a huge chunk of Intel, so they make a profit whenever Intel's sales go well.
