In a recent article in the New York Times (registration required -- or use BugMeNot), there were many, many websites listed where people could download free, legally distributable music from the Internet. Two sites in particular caught my eye:

  1. The American Memory Sound Recording Collections at the Library of Congress -- Music and Sounds from all over the USA; from man-on-the-street interviews to live folk music to recorded speeches of dead presidents.
  2. The Folkways Collection at the Smithsonian Museum -- Traditional folk music from around the world, including Caribean, Hawaiian, Native American, Iranian, Surinami, and Indonesian.
I'm thinking there are probably a large number of musical gems to discover here.

Hm ... must go looking for Jamaican and Balinese music (for very different reasons, of course).
