Dude.... wait, what?
Jul. 2nd, 2008 01:08 pmSo it seems that some research is indicating that while psilocybin (the drug in Magic Mushrooms) can have dangerous side effects, it can also have lasting long-term beneficial effects.
The Privileged.
Jul. 2nd, 2008 01:37 pmI was reading a list of ways in which Males are privileged in our society. I tend to agree with the list, although I have issues with #25 (which are pretty much resolved in the linked discussion) and disagree with #45 completely, as my usual experience is that when in a group of women I can never get a word in edgewise, but that isn't the case when in a group of men.
Oh, and to be fair, here's a list of ways in which Females are privileged in our society. I obviously can't say whether most females would agree with this list, but they do appear generally valid.
Comparing the two lists, it would appear that men are generally more privileged that women in our society (a conclusion that should surprise no one) although I think they both pale in comparison to the list of privileges we have simply from being in our society, as opposed to some other.

Three Strikes.
Jul. 2nd, 2008 01:41 pmThere are a large number of three-strikes proposals being made around the world right now, where an ISP would be required to cut off Internet service to anyone merely being accused of copyright infringement on three separate occasions. Cory Doctorow proposes a turn-about-is-fair-play suggestion that any company falsely making three copyright-infringement claims against others have their ISPs cut off their service. Now THAT is something that I could get behind.
Blast from the Past.
Jul. 2nd, 2008 05:13 pmToday
rehenazelreyhan was mentioning her dislike of the Law of Attraction, one of those pseudo-scientific new-ageisms that I so abhor. It reminded me of a one-hit-wonder of a song I came across in my music collection the other day. MC 900ft Jesus presents Truth is Out of Style:

Ever since I first heard this song in the Nineties, the phrase "but I could not go to work because bigfoot stole my car" has expressed for me the kind of outrageous lies that the new age movement regularly gets away with.

Train 999 Nonstop, Northbound, Forever
Jul. 2nd, 2008 07:39 pmHere's a description of an idea for a train that never stops. Instead passenger loading/unloading cars riding on top of the train are attached/detached at stations as the train roars through at full speed.
