I am slowly rotating my hours, and have now gotten to the point where I'm technically getting up very, very early, as opposed to very, very late. This will probably continue until Saturday where I rather expect I shall stay up very late and possibly drink much drink resulting in sleeping in again. In the meantime I'm getting caught up on my sleep and recovering from the insomnia, which is very important to me.

*SIGH*

Webigail seems to have crashed. Not sure what happened. I was checking my email and in one moment it went from fine to completely unresponsive. Well, not completely, in that I could pull up a login screen on its console, I just couldn't log in, or do anything else. In the end I had to give it the three-fingered salute.

Right now it doesn't manage to pass file system check and actually hung in the middle of telling me one of the disks looked fine. :-/

Normally at this point I'd boot it up into single-user mode using the emergency boot CD we keep handy, but I can't find it anywhere. So, now I'm going to download and burn another copy of the boot CD, and see if I can't find out what is wrong.

Meanwhile, of course, I don't have a mail server so if you want to contact me, better use my swestrup -AT- gmail.com address.

EDIT: After some fardling around it seems like some raid partitions aren't being found, or refuse to live in the raid arrays, or something. I'm going to have to wait for the live DVD to finish downloading so I can check things out properly.

Well, the main raid on webigail (my web/mail server) is borked. Its a RAID5, so theoretically two drives out of the three have to fail in order for it to stop working. This seems to have happened.

There is a hard sector error on one drive, and the second inexplicably only registers as a 'spare' not a 'member'. No idea what caused that. The third drive seems fine, but that won't be enough to get anything working.

Right now I'm running a non-destructive drive recovery program on (what I hope is) the defective drive. If I can get the bad disk working I can create a working RAID with the two non-spares and use that to upgrade the spare to a full member. If not, it may be a long time before the mail server is back up.

My new word for the day is Monopsony. Logically, I should have encountered this word before now, but I have no recollection of ever having done so. Then again, right now my brain is a slurpee.
