Yawn. I was up till 8:00 am again this morning, working on the server upgrade. I managed to figure out why one of the NICs wasn't working. It was due to my BIOS settings. Of course, fiddling with the settings means that the OTHER NIC stopped working. Whats worse, I was tired and didn't write down the original settings, so I couldn't simply put things back and reboot the old version of the server software. Dang. Sometime I am sooooo stuuuuupid.

As a result, I'm having to use slow dialup to real LJ and post important messages, such as the below:

Study: Fellatio may significantly decrease the risk of breast cancer in women

Yuck!

www.cam.org is my backup ISP when I'm having server problems. They stink. They were great 10 years ago, but they are awful now. I've lost my dialup connection something like 50-100 times while trying to post the last article. I'm not going to do much surfing or posting here on LJ until I fix my server.

So, last night (er, this morning) I was just winging things configuring the server, and I managed to mess up all of my BIOS settings so that even the old version of the software wouldn't boot.

So, THIS time I did it in a professional manner. I pulled out my log book, wrote down all of the various pieces of hardware in the box (for later net lookup if necessary), then I reset the BIOS to factory defaults and carefully recorded every one.

Then I booted the server and confirmed that this setup doesn't work. Elapsed time: 90 minutes.

So then, the very first setting that I try fixes the problem and everything boots perfectly, and I'm now using the upgraded server to post this. Now, all I have to do is start a stress test and see if the upgraded server lacks the constant crashing that prompted me to do the upgrade in the first place. Time will tell. Anyway, I've set things up so that if the server reboots it'll reboot into the old server code, so I'll know if the test failed, but [livejournal.com profile] taxlady will still have service. She was really nice about the fact that I had screwed up our broadband internet access for the day...
