So, this time [livejournal.com profile] _sps_ was NOT exactly correct, and he needs to apologize. I asked him to write a little XML parser for me on the weekend, and he threw something together from the XML::Parser Perl library I had, saw that it produced nothing, and told me that my library or interface to it was broken. I've now download and tested half-a-dozen examples of uses of this exact same library, and they work as advertised.

So, now I'm gonna have to read the docs and find out why the library didn't work as expected, and will have to do the work myself. Harrumph!

But at least I get to feel smug about catching [livejournal.com profile] _sps_ in an overt error. I don't get to do that very often.

heee!

I caught him in one on the algo I've been implementing, too. Though he's blaming it on ZW, who implemented it before me. He claims the fix he's just given me is the original design which ZW refused to believe. Grrr.

No, that's not really what I'm claiming. I'm admitting that I screwed up in that I 'simplified' something that was already as simple as it could possibly be. I said that I thought the original idea for this 'simplification' (i.e. the idea of encoding even children instead of odd ones) might have come from YZ, and that we both failed to catch the problem with it before; but that YZ had me persuaded that the symptoms of the problem had some other cause (you've already seen how subtle bugs in one place can mask them in another!).

The fix I've just given you is the 'original' design in the sense that it's the one that was in the zeroeth draft of the present design document. I think it might have been the original-original design, but I'm not 'claiming' that, at least, not without checking old notes....

That was not my title. Mozilla did something weird to me.

Did you find docs? I was really pretty sure that the approach I was attempting was what the manpage suggested, but as you saw, the manpage wasn't very clear at all.

As to apologising, well, I'm sorry. I won't try to use something from CPAN again :-}.
