Video Server
Mar. 18th, 2009 04:02 amI am quite glad of the progress that I've been making in getting this file-and-video server up and running. The file server part was the easy bit and now seems to be going smoothly. Now is the bit where I have to figure out how to set up a video server and a front-end to talk the TV.
I have tentatively decided to go with VLC as the video server. This is mainly because its the ONLY Linux video server I could find. Nevertheless, it does seem to feature both broadcast and video-on-demand options as well as allowing me to actually set up a local 'broadcast' TV schedule. Said schedule is encoded in laboriously hand-made control files though, so I suspect I am going to see if I can't either find or write a perl script to generate them for me.
There's a wider variety of video front-ends one can use, and I'm strongly considering MythTV because I hear its a mature product. Frankly all I need is something that provides an ON-TV interace that can let me choose between watching cable channels, internal streaming channels, or items in a library. All else is gravy.
So, what do folks think of these selections? Reasonable? Crazy? Does anyone have any experience doing this sort of thing before? Know of any other video servers or TV front-ends I should look into? Right now I'm very willing to consider alternatives. Once I've put a bunch of work into this next phase, I won't be nearly so willing to consider other alternatives.
