Last. Day. Of. Work.
Nov. 7th, 2008 07:27 amSo, I'm getting ready to head in for my last day. There was a bunch of stuff I was hoping to get done by today, but didn't manage to. Oh well. I don't think it would be a good idea to try to write and check in anything today. What I've done up to now is solid and well-debugged and anything I could accomplish today would just destabilize that. So, I think today is going to be spent writing some documentation, filling in time sheets and other bureaucratic documents, saying goodbye, the usual.
Still not sure what to think of all this. The political environment at work was not (and is not) pleasant to deal with, and the concomitant lack of technical standards for the work made everything harder to accomplish than it should have been. So, I can't say I'll be sad to leave the project. On the other hand, there are a bunch of good people at the office, and it felt good to be writing code again.
I hadn't expected that last bit. This entire trip to California has not only helped me with my debt situation, its also helped me resolve some issues I've been having. I've spent a lot of the last year wondering if I still wanted to be a programmer, and if so, what kind. No direction I could think of, career-wise, seemed interesting.
Well, I've now worked out that I really want to get into a situation where I'm doing algorithm research. I was extremely disappointed when the research position I was hired for was eliminated and the idea of just doing game coding seemed utterly dull by comparison.
So, once I get home, I'm going to start trying to figure out how to get into the kind of job I want, now that I've finally figured out what that is.
But first, I have one last day at the office to put in.
