We just got back from the Hospital, where we've been for the last 26 hours or so, because yesterday [livejournal.com profile] taxlady had an episode of what we thought could have been a stroke or a TIA, but which now appears most likely to have been a rather bizarre migraine. More tests will follow in the future (probably after tax season), but for now we're home.

As I've been awake for 36 hours or so, I am heading off to bed. I've brushed my teeth, had a shower (which I desperately needed) and I'm typing this. As soon as I'm dry, I'm hitting the sheets.  And speaking of migraines, it will be a minor miracle if I don't have one tomorrow when I wake up, as this sort of sleep imbalance is one of my major triggers.

I saw "stroke" and got all scared. Bizarre migraine, all right. Must be going around; I had one yesterday.

Migraines can be weird. I had one like that years ago, when all of a sudden I couldn't speak for about a minute or two. And my hand and tongue tingled.

Who told you that was a migraine? It sounds more like a TIA to me. Well, at least TIAs probably don't do any permanent damage. They don't show up on scans taken later. "Did I have any difficulty speaking?" was the first in a list of things the doctor asked me and then ruled out TIA because I said no.

The neurologist told me it was a "classic migraine", and it is definitely one of the symptoms listed for that.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Migraine#Signs_and_symptoms:

"Other symptoms of the aura phase can include auditory or olfactory hallucinations, temporary dysphasia, vertigo, tingling or numbness of the face and extremities, and hypersensitivity to touch."

"Dysphasia is a language disorder in which there is an impairment of speech and of comprehension of speech."

I tend to get auras without the headaches for the most part (for which I am eternally grateful), but that was the weirdest aura I've ever had.

Hmm, well, I was told some completely contradictory things by some of the doctors I saw in the past two days. I think they don't really know as much as they pretend.

I get the (usually) painless aura migraines too. Mine are really pretty, with rainbow colours. They asked all about that.

I hope she's ok. Best wishes to both of you. Being up for more than 28 hours makes me completely loopy.
