Well, I have now managed to take a working windows system with lots of features turned on, and converted into a broken windows system with most features turned off.

This is, if not exactly going to plan, not totally unexpected either. My new system has an AHCI SATA mode, which is known to be problematic on Windows XP. So of course I turned it on. I got it working first try.

Then I tried to reinstall windows with it turned on. BOOM! Also, none of my live Linux distributions will boot in this mode, but they all seem to complain of not being able to talk to the CD...

Now I'm trying to see if I can get a working system by reinstalling Windows with AHCI turned off. If so, I'll try seeing if I can turn it on again.

All this is in aid of trying to figure out how to set up my system for real, after I've repartitioned and reformatted my main drive.

Something about gluttony and punishment comes to mind.
