Dead Computer
Nov. 24th, 2007 04:22 pmI'm typing this on
taxlady's machine, because mine won't boot. I put in the new power supply that my brother gave me (it turned out to have a modular connector that allowed you to remove 4 pins making its connector compatible with my machine).
Afterwards, when I went to boot, it stopped mid-way throught the power-on self-test and just sat there beeping. No idea why. Its possible that the new power supply isn't strong enough, although it claims to be 450 watts and the old one was just 300. Looking at the rated maximum amperages for the various voltages, in most categories the old power supply gave higher values than the new one.
So, I reconnected the old power supply, turned it on... and same thing. Beep. Beep. Beep. I tried disconnecting everything but the MB and the boot drive, but no dice. It just won't go.
Right now I'm hoping that is just a case of the old power supply having been on its last legs, and physically removing it killed it, and the new one not being strong enough. In that case we can go to Microbytes tomorrow (its a bit late today, the store will be packed), and spend the last of my birthday money on a 450-watt power supply that's actually rated higher than the old one (which I'll bring along).
If that doesn't work (and I have to accept the possibility that there's something else wrong) then we'll have to have a technician check the machine out and fix it, and I have no idea how we'll ever afford that.
Naturally enough, I'm going to be hard to reach by computer until this is sorted out. You'll be better off phoning me or Linda.
