Goodbye Sucha.
Nov. 21st, 2007 01:56 amWell, in the end, we never had to make the hard decision. She made it for us. Today while I was asleep,
sucha died.
She had a good long life with us, I like to think. She lived far longer than a cat in the wild would have, and we did our very best to make sure that her last days were full of all her favorite things. When we found out her condition back on August 29th, the vet had only given her 4-6 weeks to live, so the fact that she lasted through October and into November just shows how stubborn she was.
Thanks to the medication, she was fairly strong and capable, up until the last 24 hours or so. It was only yesterday evening that she suddenly became so weak she had trouble moving. I'm glad I was awake all night keeping her company during some of her last hours. I would have liked to have been awake when she passed, but these things are impossible to predict, and I had decided that it would be better if I kept my hours staggered, so that either
taxlady or I would be awake at all times to give her comfort.
At least this way there's some sort of closure.
shreddy has sniffed the body and is very subdued, but he understands (as well as a cat can) what has happened to his lifelong companion. Had we taken her to the vet and never brought her back, he might have spent a long time wondering when she was coming home. This way he knows she's gone.
Right now, she's laying 'in state' downstairs in a box, and we have just a few things left to do to put this sad event behind us. I'm going to find a smaller box to bury her in (the one she's in right now is huge, and non-closing) , and I'm going to find a rock for
taxlady to paint as a headstone. Up until a few years ago we would have buried her across the street in the woods, but those woods are gone now, turned into condos, as there's been so much development in the area. Luckily there is still an old fallow farmers field not far from our house, where we can bury her.
I'll try to find a good stone tonight, and with any luck we can bury her tomorrow, and close this final chapter in her life.
