Thanks to an anonymous tip, I now know that the SF short story I've been looking for is called "Nobody Bothers Gus", as well as its two sequels "The Peasant Girl" and "And Then She Found Him", all by Algis Budrys (although the first two were originally published under the name of "Paul Janvier".

A quick check in my own SF collection hasn't turned up much by Budrys (other than the wonderful Michelmas), but I have yet to begin looking through all the various books of short stories I have. Still, if anyone has these stories close to hand, in any format (book, text, even (ugh) audio), I'd love to borrow them.

Is there some sort of LJ community that does this? When I saw your earlier post, it reminded me that there's another sci-fi short story I've been meaning to track down myself...

He also wrote Rogue Moon, which I remember liking a lot.
