I haven't been posting much lately, but I have been reading LJ and keeping up with things. Lets see, what was I up to last week?
Well, on the weekend I had foolishly told Terry that I would move his website (http://www.anticipationsf.ca) over to a CMS so it would be easier to maintain. Wanting to preserve the look and feel, I started work on a website template for PmWiki, my CMS of choice. As you may have guessed by the various "Argh!" posts around that time, it did not go smoothly. By the end of Monday my experimental skin was still mostly broken.
Tuesday Terry,
taxlady and I drove to Ottawa to a) Visit the British Embassy to find out how to apply for my passport, b) meet up with
thebabynancy and c) do some balloon sightseeing. Actually,
taxlady and I went to do those things. Terry wanted to get some stuff from his apartment in Ottawa.
In the end, we really only managed a) on that list. We set out for Ottawa around 8:00 am, an hour later than planned, and managed to drop Terry off at his place by 11:00. By 11:30 we were at the Embassy, which is good because they're only open from 9:00 am to Noon. We had to go through a metal detector and stuff to get into the Embassy (something that I should have expected in these post-9/11 days, but didn't), but after that things went quite quickly and we were out by quarter to twelve.
It turns out that I don't have the right kind of birth certificate from B.C. and will need to send away for one, but otherwise it looks straightforward, now that I've had the process explained. I only need to apply for a passport, not for citizenship, but I'll be granted citizenship as a side-effect of being issued a passport. It seems that being eligible for a passport makes you 3/4 of the way to being a citizen anyway, so it should just be a rubber stamp. I also picked up copies of the C-1 form one needs to fill out and confirmed that there's no help to be had from the local consulate in these matters (ie, I can't give THEM the papers or pick up the passport from them). Its also only $216, not the $450 or something that it would cost if I was going the full citizenship route.
Unfortunately,
thebabynancy was stuck in an office all day, so we didn't get a chance to see her. We also couldn't find any information on the Hot-Air Balloon thingy she had mentioned, so we ended up wandering through some parks and stuff instead. We did get some pictures of squirrels that decided to pose for us though.
After that, we picked up Terry at his place and drove back, stopping in Hawkesbury for supper.
The next day (Wednesday) I mainly spent just catching up on mail and stuff that happened while I was in Ottawa. Other than that, it was kind of quiet.
Thursday I spent working on the website design and had a breakthrough. It turns out its a good plan to ensure that IE (in quirks mode) doesn't have both absolutely and statically positioned divs in the same descent tree or all kinds of bugs emerge. One they were in two different CSS cascades, it all worked much better and I now have a basic design that works.
Friday I went for a long walk with Terry to enjoy the autumn sunlight and to scrunch through piles of leaves. Its definitely fall now. Afterwards I spent some time turning the test web page into a skin, but there's still a number of hours of work to go. I also discovered that the web page that I was basing my design upon has been redesigned (*headdesk*). For now, I won't worry about it. I'll complete my rejiggering to the old vision of the site, and let the various people in charge modify or swap out the skin as they see fit.
Now its Saturday and as
lesnuages is out of town, I'll be heading downtown shortly to meet up with
sps and spend the day just bumming around and chatting, just like it was some kind of weekend, or something.
So, that's what I've been up to!
