Dec. 19th, 2003 01:36 pmI am Soooo not a morning person. I'm not really a waking-up sort of person at all. My alarm went off at 10:00 am today, since I have huge amounts of cleaning and stuff to do before our Sunday Yule party. I finally crawled out of bed at 11:30, having hit the snooze button every 9 minutes in the interval. I then staggered downstairs. That is literal. I usually don't have very good balance when I first awake.
Another thing I don't have is a voice. I have chronic rhinitis which means that I can seldom breathe clearly through my nose (and end up needing decongestants regularly), and end up doing a lot of mouth breathing while asleep. What's worse, my sinuses are always draining down the back of my throat. While I sleep, the mouth-breathing makes that gunge get dry and harden, and I wake with my mouth so dry that my lips and tongue are stuck to my mouth and I can't move my lips or tongue and can't swallow or talk. A glass of water near my bed helps me be able to talk and swallow again, but the gunge needs either a LOT of water to soften, or steaming hot tea or coffee. So, a hot drink is a major priority upon awakening, even if we ignore the caffeine factor.
I also have a problem with my eyes. I (almost) never have stereoscopic vision (I get all of my 3D info from head paralax) and my two eyes often show me different images. I tend to pay attention to only one view at a time, depending on what I am doing. However, first thing in the morning that just takes too much mental effort, and just confuses me, so I usually keep only one eye open for the first little while. This wouldn't be so bad, but upon waking my eyes spend the next 30-45 minutes going teary and blurring my vision. Now, NORMALLY if my eyes tear-up for some reason, I would just rub the moisture away with my hands but, as I've posted previously, I seem to exude some skin oil when I sleep that I MUST NOT let get near my eyes, or it stings like crazy and makes me unable to see at all.
So, upon awaking today, I managed to slowly bump my way downstairs, only to find that there was no coffee and the various bits for making coffee were scattered around the kitchen. (Our coffeemaker died quite a few months back, so we've been doing things manually since). So, I stumbled around, and found the bits. Then I boiled the water and measured coffee into our manual cone. Finally, I started pouring the water, only to have my vison completely blur out on me. I am now blindly pouring boiling water, with no vision, no sense of balance, and no recollection of where I could put the kettle down. So, I stop pouring, hold the kettle in mid-air and blink maddly until I can see again. By then the cone needs more water and I recommence pouring, only to have my vision go out again. Repeat whole procedure five or six times until kettle is almost empty and coffee is made. Finally I can pour myself some coffee and drink it to clear the gunge out of my throat.
Is it any wonder I have 'buy a new coffeemaker' so much higher on my list of priorities than it is on
taxladys? And now, I think I need to take a shower, since I've been up for 3 hours now and my eyes still went blurry twice while writing this.
