So, I'm away from home for a couple of days for the first time since the Denmark trip and the moment I arrive I find I cannot contact or even ping my server at home.

What? Everything was finally working when I left. Even if we had a power failure and the webserver didn't come back up automatically, the firewall and DNS should have.

Meanwhile, here at the 'rents, I've helped install a computer desk (so I am no longer typing this on boxes) and dealt with Sympatico technical support. They a) think that there is something wrong with the line leading to the house, which is why the DSL here is lousy and b) they know they have a borked mail server, which is why my Mom can't send or receive mail.

As well, they know (but won't admit) that they block the use of other mail servers so my Mom can't use the mail server on her domain which is currently being hosted in B.C.

Of course, to get that far I had to spend quite some time crawling around in the crawlspace where my brother installed the ADSL modem and Hub last week. They have now been moved to a more reasonable location (and one that won't cause a technician to claim its all our fault), but as a result my Dad no longer has ADSL in his office. All I need is a female-female ethernet connector like I have at home, to patch together the two cables that terminate in the crawlspace.

The trouble is, the closest place I know that sells them is over 100 KM away right now. I may end up buying a el-cheapo hub for my folks tomorrow, to install in the crawlspace, and will swap it with a simple connector on a later visit.
