Here's an article (weak on details) about a new method of building a 'cloaking device' which would emit light that cancelled out the light bouncing off of a nearby object, thus rendering it invisible. At this stage the device is only theoretical and would be unable to cloak anything more complex than dust.

Well, nanobots are still a ways away, so cloaking for mote-sized particles probably has a few years of useful application...

I suspect that before any such device is built there will be improvements in the theoretical model that allows for the cloaking of more complex shapes, provided the idea proves to be at all practical, that is.
