No, this post is not about flatulence.

For those who haven't heard, there was an issue of a Danish newspaper recently in which a cartoonist depicted Mohammed as a terrorist. A number of Muslim nations have taken offense and are boycotting the country. So far these include Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, but it looks like more are going to follow.

In support of free speech, some web sites like this one, are listing Danish exports that can be bought in North America as a sort-of counter boycott. As a result, I have now found out about The Danish Foodshop and The Danish Deli, two online exporters of fine Danish food.

Now when [livejournal.com profile] taxlady next has a serious hankering for some obscure foodstuff I've never heard of, I know how it can be obtained.

As they say, Tis an ill wind that blows no one any good.

[personal profile] patgund, who lives in Qatar, already posted in his LJ about how the supermarkets that sell to expats are taking Danish food off the shelves. I referred to this in my LJ this morning.

Was it a *national* paper, for starters, or are people just being silly?

I'm not sure what newspaper "JP" is. I also wish I had a link to that cartoon.

I think JP is Jyllandske Post (sp?). It's not a national newspaper. It may be popular throughout Jylland (Jutland in English), which is the peninsula attached to Germany. But, that isn't the population centre of Denmark. That's Copenhagen.

'toons published in Egypt last fall

Apparently the caricatures were published in an Egyptian paper (http://360.yahoo.com/profile-MTgIteo8fqIVMk4my7uIjmhJdzs-) last October, with nary a controversy. The Egyptian who scanned the paper and posted it speculated all the hay being made from the Danish publication was intended to distract Muslims from government shenanigans.

LOL - I've been a lurker since you sent me the link. I don't often have time to drop in, but do enjoy reading it when I do. I really miss you guys, and it's nice to be able to hear your voice (virtually, anyway). I just recently figured out I could comment without joining LJ. Not that I'd mind joining, I just don't have time to do anything with it if I did.

PS: I probably should have given a permanent link to the 'toon posting (http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-MTgIteo8fqIVMk4my7uIjmhJdzs-?p=518). The other posts will push it down out of sight.
