Fixed!

I got it all fixed and working again. It seems that the missing element was a 'raid-extra-boot=mbr' in my lilo.conf.

So now Webigail is happily booting from a raid mirrored across all of her boot partitions, and it should be able to boot even if one of the 3 drives fails. I haven't tested this, because I would have to open the machine up and play around some more, which I muchly don't want to do right now.

You know, this particular problem would not have been hard to fix if I had been able to find the correct LILO docs online (which, according to some of the LILO docs (and contradicted by other lilo docs)) is the README found in the source...

Many times I found stuff that didn't discuss my problem but just said 'See the extensive lilo docs for further info.' No pointer, nothing. Even the project home page for LILO only provides documents dating from 1998. I finally found a README.raid1 file which had the exact information I needed, but it took a LOT of looking.

Anyway, it all works now, and things are not nearly as hosed as I was fearing for a bit.
