I've been reading through the tech news that I've gotten behind on, and I found this interesting opinion piece on what Mutilple personality disorder can tell us about our naive ideas on the nature of conciousness.
If you have $10 to spend (since the forums are pay-to-read now instead of just pay-to-post) there was a fascinating thread on the Something Awful forums recently called "Ask us about having multiple personalities", in which a member with DID talks about her 12 "alters" and fields questions from all comers. She gives quite detailed answers - fascinating stuff.
My admittedly uninformed view: the brain is the hardware; the mind is the software (not the structure of the brain; that I also consider hardware... the information actively being processed and the activity of the conscious thought/attention subprogram are the 'mind'). Why not have multiple interfaces?
This Dennett is getting a lot of press lately. Worth looking into, perhaps. And personally, if that means much anymore... I don't care what things turn out to be, as long as I don't die without learning the truth, and as long as I can find some happiness, whether devoid of "objective" meaning or not. Curiosity and the need for exploration drive me.
