The way I see it, putting me on your friends list means you trust me enough to let me in on your "friends-only" posts, should you ever have any. So I add you to mine in return (at the same time removing you from my bookmarks if that's where you were initially).
(I don't add people to my list unless they add me to theirs first. If I find a journal I'm interested in following, it goes into my bookmarks, not my friends list.)
