Good news and bad news. First the good news:

Had a great time at the party! I've really been jonesing for pizza for the last month, and I finally got to EAT pizza! No carb counting or nothing (well -- okay, I asked for thin crust, when I prefer thick, but that was it.) We sat around, drinking wine, eating pizza and playing various new-fangled card games like Apples to apples and Citidel. Just good times shared with good friends. Some friends were unable to make it due to work, sickness or other commitments, but I still had a really good time. Even the "Mythical" Sandy showed up, which made my day. [livejournal.com profile] denizsarikaya refuses to believe it though, since she managed to be asleep the entire time that Sandy was at the party.

Now the BAD news. As we were heading out the door to attend aforesaid wonderful party, we saw water spilling all over the basement floor from the general vicinity of the waterheater. No sign of a leak (not that its easy to get into that corner to have a look). Now this has happened before. A few times now we've gone downstairs to find a mysterious puddle of water on the floor, but no obvious cause. We checked the overflow valve, and it looked fine. This time the water was clearly pouring out from somewhere behind the waterheater. We turned off the feed for the heater and the water stopped so we went to the party determined not to think about possibly expensive repairs till we got home. Well, after the party we decided to turn on the feed again, and see what happened. I figured it was worth a try since we had seen puddles before without an active leak, so it may have been an intermittent valve problem. No luck, as soon as the water had been back on for more than about 3 minutes, water started pouring out again. So, now it looks like we sprung a massive leak out the back of the heater somehow. We currently have no hot water and will have to do some major work to get at the heater. (Remember the massive credenza we got for free a couple of months ago that we were going to put into [livejournal.com profile] taxlady's office as soon as she made room for it? Well its now in front of the water heater, and room will have to be found for it in a hurry if we want a plumber to have access to the tank.)  The big question is: how do we pay for the repairs? I think it cost me about $800 when I had that water heater installed circa 1994. That's only 10 years ago. IT SHOULD NOT HAVE FAILED ALREADY! Anyhow, without a plumber having a look at it, I've no idea if its a write-off or what, but I fear the worst.

How long was it guaranteed for? Some are only guaranteed for 5 years, some for 10, and some for longer, I think.

My dad has been pestering me to replace my water heater because it's already OVER TEN YEARS OLD!!! (gasp) and that's apparently way too long to keep a water heater (according to him).
