Yesterday I finished watching the Greg The Bunny DVD and I thought I should post a mini-review. First of all, I should point out that the various commentaries mention a few times that the folks involved would love to restart the show, and that the actors are all available (with the possible exception of Eugene Levy) and are also willing. Fox has already restated "Family Guy" after it was cancelled because the DVD sales were so hot. Lets hope the same happens for Greg

The set contains two DVD's, each with roughly half of the first season's shows, plus a few extras like deleted scenes and commentary tracks. My copy of the DVD had a flaw at the end of 'Rabbit Redux' but otherwise the episodes played as expected. There were 3 episodes that I had never seen, probably because FOX never released them. Although the commentaries indicated that the show had been taped in both widescreen and HDTV versions, the episodes were all in the normal 4:3 tv ratio (what's that called, anyway?). I also gather that more than one of the episodes had to have its music track replaced since the rights were only ever negotiated for cable broadcast, not DVD release.

The comentaries varied from lame to interesting . There were commentaries for only about 4 or 5 of the 13 episodes (not all of them, as one reviewer I saw claimed), and didn't manage to hit the episodes that I was most interested in hearing about (SK 2.0 and Father & Son Reunion), but they mostly (one was almost completely vacuous) gave interesting insights into what the original intent of the show was, and how much FOX screwed with it, even before it was on air. It also turns out that there were a bunch of puppets that got made and never really managed to get onto the show except as extras.

There were only a few bits and pieces of outtakes and such, since there was no attempt made to keep such things during the shooting of the show. Finally, there were two little vignettes that were included. "Tardy Delivery" is funny skit about what happens when someone asks Tardy Turtle to deliver a letter, and "Reality" is a very disturbing piece from the Independant Film Channel (where Greg got his start), in which someone tries to prove to Greg that he only exists when in front of the camera and is an inert piece of fabric the rest of the time. I found this very disturbing (as, indeed, did Greg). I was expecting to see the 10 minute short that had aired on Mad TV (and which I downloaded from the net) but it wasn't included. Its no loss though, as I found that skit unfunny (Greg interviews his ex-drama coach for a part on the show).

On the whole, I liked it, and I think its worth the bucks, especiallly if one is a Greg the Bunny fan, but buy it for the episodes and not the extras.
