You may have noticed that that previous Slashdot link also had a pointer to this bit of good news. (Warning: That link will expire in a week. The Gazette doesn't give free access to its archives.) It seems that the laws making it illegal for Canadians to subscribe to television programming via foreign satellite systems was struck down because it interfered with Canadian's rights to free expression as defined under our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The CRTC has a year to try and come up with a non-infringing version of the law, but I don't see how that is too likely to happen.
