Is murky and strange. The reporting on same is doubly so. So, in retrospect, I shouldn't be surprised that the main #1 question that occurs to me upon hearing about Saddam Hussein's two dead sons is nowhere answered by the media, nor can I find any help on the Internet. Still, maybe if I ask here someone out there will know: Why did Saddam name his sons in Pig Latin? I mean, what kind of a message is that to your kids? And then, when you do convert the names out of pig latin, they still don't make sense:

Uday -> Du, and Qusay -> Squ.

Okay, so they sound real stupid as names: "Hey Du, where's Squ got to?", but couldn't Saddam simply have picked non-stupid names for his kids rather than disguising them with pig latin? Or do "Du" and "Squ" mean something special in Arabic? But if they do, why disguise the names?

Oh, I dunno. The more I think about it, the more confused I get. Maybe I'll just go ask [livejournal.com profile] m_cat she knows everything.

QUSAY m Arabic
Derived from Arabic qasiy meaning "distant". This was the name of an ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad who was in charge of a temple in Mecca.

Uday was harder to find as I kept putting arabic in my search , and it's not an arabic name but a indian name ( loosely adopted into arabic names ):

Uday
Meaning: to rise, dawn, beginning
