I'm awake again at the usual time. Yesterday was hectic but not nearly so awful as the last few days. Since I didn't get home till almost midnight on Monday, and I knew it would be 1:00 am or later before I would fall asleep, I set my alarm for 9:30 am, so I could get a full 8 hours.
At around 10:30 am, after I had woken and showered and was drinking my first coffee, the phone rang from work. They had a bunch of last-minute script changes that the clients had asked for, and they needed them fast. So, I said I would log in from home and work on them, so they wouldn't have to wait the 2 hours it takes me to get to work when the rush hour busses and trains aren't running.
Well, changes 1 and 2 took a total of 5 minutes to complete, and change 3 took most of the next 4 hours. (Ugh. I hate writing complex bash scripts to dynamically create sed scripts -- before I've even had breakfast). Now, these script changes weren't huge, but they needed to be tested and I couldn't do that from home. Well, I COULD if there were any testbeds that folks were willing to let me use, as I access them remotely, even when at work, but there weren't.
So, I headed into work and got there at 4:00 pm. I spent the next few hours running through the scripts, fixing the half-dozen syntax errors and removing a bunch of debug output I had mistakenly left in. Anyway, at 7:00 pm, I was done for the day, and the latest debugged version of the scripts were mailed off to our clients in Germany.
Since it wasn't yet too terribly late, it was still possible to meet a bunch of folks for Bowling. I hurried over to the bowling place, but got there after the latest round of games had just started. So, I sat out the first game, and played the next. By the time it was over (and much chatting was done, and beer was drunk) it was 9:00 pm and I had to head home.
I got in just after 10:00 pm, which is my bedtime, since the alarm goes off at 6:00 am. I didn't actually manage to fall asleep until past 11:00, but that's okay. I'm far more willing to lose a little sleep because I had a good time with friends, than because my boss made a bad judgement call.
And now I'm awake and getting ready to head in for what is supposed to be a normal and non-hectic day at work. We'll see how it all goes.
Seeing folks last night was lots of fun, but there are a number of folks on my friends list that I haven't heard from in days. I don't know if its been because I was unavailable, or they were, or what, but I could use a heads up just to know that they're still alive...
