I went bowling last night, and had a wonderful time. I almost chickened out due to shyness. Everyone that I know already, that said they were going to attend, seemed to be backing out. I really didn't want to end up bowling with a bunch of people I hardly knew, but I told myself that it would be, if nothing else, an opportunity for growth. Well it turned out that I knew a bunch of the folks that showed, and I had a really good time. So, yay me!

Of course, I stayed up waaaay late and got home around 11:00 pm (1 hour past bedtime) to discover that my ISP was down. What's worse, there was a note from my ISP asking me to reduce my MTU to 1454. WTF? Okay, I know what an MTU is, at least, and I know that my LEAF router mentions it in at least a dozen places, but I have no idea how to correctly modify the MTU (or even which MTU to modify) when running TCP/IP over PPP over Ethernet over ADSL over Whatever. I tried stuff until 1:00 am and finally gave up and went to bed. Its the sort of thing that would have been easy to look up if I had had access to Google. (I did have a local copy of all of the official documentation, as I'm not a complete idiot) but all it said was to consult a list of web pages if you had troubles of my kind.) I was so upset at not having internet access, and not being sure how to fix the problem, that I didn't fall asleep until past 2:00 am. That is the first time in over a month that I've had any trouble at all falling asleep. I had kind of gotten used to not having insomnia. I'm not pleased that it chose to return.

Anyway, 6:00 am was WAAAAAY too early. Luckily for me, the fact that I've been cutting out sugar and caffeine is that when I need to perk up, I can have an espresso with extra sugar and WHOOOO. Actually, I wasn't desperate enough to need the sugar, but that option is always there for next time.

Anyway, today [livejournal.com profile] taxlady talked to the people at my ISP and it turns out that the MTU thing was just a rough guess by them at a workaround for a completely borked situation at their end. They hadn't expected that most folks would be able to tweak the MTU at the level that was necessary anyway. Grumph.  Anywho, it means that I don't feel quite as incompetant as otherwise.

Actually, I've been slowly realizing lately that I've been wrongfully assuming incompetance on my own part in a number of situations. As [livejournal.com profile] taxlady has been pointing out to me lately, thats a really defeatist attitude. I would elaborate further, but that would fill another post, and I should get back to work.
