Its an old joke.
A New York Cabbie picks up a man on a street corner in downtown Manhatten and asks "Where to buddy?".
The man thinks for a second and says "I don't really know New York very well. I'm just here for a conference. Could you take me to a good place to get scrod?"
"Sure thing Mack", says the cabbie and heads off into traffic. After a block or two, the cabbie asks "Are you a writer by any chance?"
"What makes you ask that?" says the Man.
"I've been driving a cab in this city for almost 20 years, and thats the first time I've ever heard anyone use the past pluperfect tense of that verb!"
