_sps_ could try some remote debuggering tomorrow. Instead I discovered a config panel where 'Start X on Boot' had been disabled. One click later, and everything Xist is back to normal on Webigail.
Now if I could just get SSH working.
I guess THAT's the job for tomorrow.
