Feelin' Old

I woke in the middle of the night, and to help distract myself before once more assaulting the walls of sleep, I loaded Google Earth and started tooling around Osoyoos, a town I lived in from the ages of roughly 5 to 9.

Its all changed. There are streets and houses where I remember dirt roads, orchards, and fields of green peppers. I eventually found my Elementary school, but its twice the size I remember and the enormous playground separating it from the High School is missing. I did find the old Motel that we owned back then, and it at least seems the same as I recall.

Its funny that most of these changes seem to have happened since I last was there in the 90s. When my Brother and I went to visit on a day trip way back then (as I was visiting my folks in Kelowna, not too far away), things had changed, but not so much. My Elementary school and High School were pretty much as I remembered then, although the proportions were different.

I'm glad I took the opportunity to visit way back when, as the pace of change seems to have only accelerated since.

And now, on that cheery note, I shall attempt to go back to sleep.

We were lost there last summer. We were going to rent a cabin and it turned out to be up a freaking mountain along a fire road. We never did find it and ended up in a motel in Vernon or something.

I've always liked the okanagan, maybe because I was born in Princeton.

Osoyoos certainly has changed. The whole area has. Some improvements, some not.

If you want an interesting example of development, google around for what the Osoyoos Indian Band has done.

I'd never heard of Osoyoos (and I take it the spelling is a transliteration from Russian?) until the penultimate episode of Stargate: Atlantis where its highway stood in for the road leading away from Vegas.

Curious stuff.
