I seem to be spending most of my days lately just waiting for lengthy processes to be finished. I've recovered what files I could from the vfat destination drive that was lying about writing files. Well, it turns out it really WAS lying about the writing. There's no sign that files were written but had unlinked directory entries, or invisible names, or became lost clusters, or anything.

I managed to recover all of the music files, but nothing else seems to have successfully written. Anyway, I'm now repurposing that drive to be a standard ext3 volume where I'll store the recovered files as I manage to undelete them from the erased source drive or find them on the several partial backups I have laying around. First though, I'm doing a full read/write blockcheck on that partition before reformatting it. After 1.5 hours the blockcheck is only 25% done, so I've got quite a bit more thumb twiddling to do while my machine acts extra sluggish.

After the blockcheck finishes there'll be a few minutes of activity while I format the partition and transfer the recovered files to it (in a copy/verify/erase manner this time, rather than a blind move), before I start imaging the second drive, and having another 3-5 hour wait. At least this second wait will involve transfers between drives that don't include my main system drive, so I should have reasonable program response while its ongoing.
